Charlotte White
Inspired by the misinterpretation of women throughout history, Charlotte wants to show the realistic aspects of womanhood. Charlotte makes her art to celebrate women and puts a positive spin on what is standardly viewed as ‘shameful’ or ‘sexual’ for women. She works in an impressionistic style using a wide range of medias, this allows her to convey emotions through her work using different textures. She makes certain parts of the pieces stand out by outlining the main focus in bold lines or by making the foreground and background different textures. This lets Charlotte control what the viewers eyes will be mostly centred on. An artist Charlotte is heavily inspired by is Vincent Van Gogh, especially his style of portraying emotions in a non-conventional way. As she discovered him at such a young age it’s helped her develop his style into hers. Another classical art piece that has inspired Charlotte is ‘The Birth of Venus’ by Sandro Botticelli. This artwork was in a childhood book of hers and consists of a naked woman in the centre and the surrounding men covered with articles of clothing. This has exposed her to the sexualisation of women’s bodies in art from a young age which gives her more passion to make her celebratory pieces.
Charlotte ‘s passion from art also comes from going to art galleries throughout her life and seeing artists pieces being exhibition for all to see. This passion has then allowed her to have an exhibition of her work in Gods House Tower. She is currently working on a new project called women-me where she explores her own personal womanhood.
